NUGGET THE KNIGHT

A retro grid-based inventory RPG crafted for the GBJAM 14!

THE CORE STRATEGY: GOLD OR GEAR

Every battle rewards you with gold nuggets, but managing your limited inventory space is where the true challenge lies:

  • The Gamble: Every round you hold onto gold nuggets inside your bag without selling it, its value doubles (2x).
  • The Dilemma: Do you hoard your gold nuggets to maximize your wealth, risking precious grid space that could otherwise hold a massive Broadsword or a Crypt Door? Or do you cash out early to buy vital gear to survive the next brutal wave of enemies?

CONTROLS

Designed to match the exact button layout of an old-school handheld system:

  • D-Pad (Arrow Keys / WASD): Move & Navigate
  • A Key (J / L / Z / C ): Confirm / Use Item / Place (Main control)
  • B Key (X / K): Sell / Rotating (Extra action)
  • SELECT (Space): Discard / Open/Close Shop (Handles scene management)
  • START (SHIFT / ENTER): Start game

Absolutely amazing little experience. Cool concept and great art!

Though like others mentioned the controls are quite annoying, i think it'd feel a lot better if it was switched to arrow keys/Z and X or WASD/ J and K.

I updated the project so there are more keybinds.

oh and another thing i just beat the game but one thing i noticed is that the defence items are way too op some of them make you invincible like litterally invincible, and if you have time make somesort of freeplay maybe some more items and also add a setting menu

I updated the shields to have less defence and added more attack power to the enemies. I don't have more time for new items or settings menu. (I didn't wanne implement settings to keep the real GameBoy vibe)

good game, but the controls are RIDICULOUSLY bad and uncomfortable

What keybind you think fit better? Than I'll change it up to make it a bit more comfortable!

First of all i think the most important  change is map the A and B buttons to Z and X, then map start to enter. That's it

Thanks for the tips I changed the inputs to more commen used map.

WOWW very good game im impressed tbh for a gamejam THIS IS GREAT the only thing i have to say is that the controls are annoying

Thanks for liking the game what are better keybinds for the game? Or what exactly you don't like.

i get the idea of the keybinds its lke a,b on the xbox and on the gameboys and ds's etc... but i feel it doesnt translate well to keyboards since the keys are far away so maybe if you just make it controller compatible thatle fix the issue(i saw your using godot just add it through the input map)
